Employee Spotlight – Jessica Schellhorn
Our next Employee Spotlight shines on the Queen of Christmas herself, Jessica Schellhorn! Jessica is a Senior Financial Analyst at CU Engage who has been with us for the last two years after being referred by a former coworker. Jessica is a no-excuses kind of girl who always looks for a way to say “yes.” She chooses to do things the right way, not the easy way. Using determination and passion Jessica makes data useful and easily accessible.
Meet Jessica “Midway” Schellhorn
Jessica has two young boys who she absolutely adores.
She’s an avid Bears fan – even through the rough years – so, you know, every year.
It’s fair to say that her relationship with coffee is obsessive. Not the caffeine –in fact, after a cup of regular, she switches to decaf, which she likes to drink black. Jess loves the smell, the taste, and, most importantly, the warmth.
It might even be accurate to say that her real obsession is with warmth. It was in search of warmth several years ago that she moved to Florida from Iowa. Now, she wears gloves when the weather dips below 80 degrees, and you can find her out enjoying the sunshine when it’s above 90.
Coffee. She loves coffee. Wait, what?
If you want to learn more about Jessica, or are just looking for a little chuckle, read Jessica’s fun facts below! Her answers do not disappoint.
Jessica’s Fun Facts:
Q: What are some of your hobbies outside the office? A: I’m a DIY’er. I love to customize furniture, décor, lights, etc. Right now, I’m putting in new flooring and customizing a nightstand. The dresser is next up.
Q: Is the glass half empty or half full? A: I’m an analyst. I’m going to need a lot more information before I can give you an answer. Like what’s in the glass? Coffee? Then let me assure you there is no “half” about it. Put coffee in front of me, and it’s undoubtedly empty.
Q: What is one thing about you few people know? A: How to spell my last name.
Q: What is your favorite holiday? A: Christmas is my favorite holiday of all time.
Q: If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? A: This is one of the worst things that could ever happen to me — hopefully, some magic meal that tastes different every single night. I like an obnoxious amount of variety in my meals. I don’t want the same thing more than maybe once a year.
Q: Are you messy or organized? A: If you’re looking for a surprising answer – you won’t find it with this question. I’m organized.
Q: Do you have an office nickname? A: Kody has given most of the team a nickname. I pestered him enough that he finally came up with one: Jessica “Midway” Schellhorn. He even included a description of why he chose that nickname: The Midway is a climate-controlled space at Soldier Field offering the amenities of a modern, upscale sports bar. Located on the west side mezzanine level behind sections 136 and 138, The Midway is open before, during, and after Bears home games. The bespoke space features private restrooms, four full-service bars, and specialty food stations, 40+ HD TVs broadcasting live game action and NFL Red Zone, and a Live DJ.
Q: What is your spirit animal? A: Hmmm, do any animals drink coffee? No? Well, I’m a Bears fan – maybe a Bear? I bet Bears are actually kind and loving creatures. They just get a little grizzly without coffee, or if you mess with their cubs. Yeah, that sounds about right for me.
Q: What book did you read last? A: Gone Girl. I’m currently reading My Husband’s Wife for my book club. That’s where I’m at in my life now. I’m in a book club.
Q: Like what celebrity do people think you look? A: I’ve never been confused with a celebrity. That’s a compliment, right?
Q: What is an ability you wish you had? A: One of those freak-type abilities. Like the ability to pronounce Worcestershire sauce, say “you were right” to my husband, or “pack lightly.”
Q: What are your pet peeves? A: Anything said or done by a Packers fan. Go Bears!
Q: What was your favorite book, toy, or outfit as a child? A: I had this little Daisy Duck doll that I took with me everywhere I could. I broke my arm when I was little, and the x-ray tech let Daisy be in the X-ray too. It made the scary experience seem fun.
Q: When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried? A: I’m probably crying in laughter as you read this. I laugh so hard I cry all the time.
Q: What is your favorite thing or place in the city you live in? A: The beach
Q: Weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? A: Frog legs, alligator, and that one time, my brother tried to “cook”.
Q: First concert? A: I am not much of a concertgoer. I’ve been to three in my life, all of which were gifts to me: Alan Jackson, NSYNC, and Zac Brown Band.
Q: Describe CU Engage in five words or less: A: Passionate, dedicated, hardworking, and fun.
Q: When you have 30 minutes of free time, what are you doing? A: What is this free time of which you speak? If I’m not working, I’m probably answering one of my boys’ “WHY?” or “What if” questions.
Q: What chore do you hate? A: Hate is a strong word. I can safely and definitively say that there are no chores that I enjoy. Yet, I love clean and tidy.
Q: Are you a hunter or a gatherer? A: When it comes to data – I am aggressively both. Non-data: I’m a gatherer.
Q: What is your favorite ‘90s jam? A: I was obsessed with two cassette tapes. Yes, that’s correct, cassette tapes. Even though CDs were around in the ’90s, I still used cassette tapes because I’m cool like that. Salt n Peppa “Very Necessary” and Snoop Dogg “Doggystyle.” I learned (and can still recite) every single lyric to every single song.
Q: Have you ever met anyone famous? A: I sat on a plane once next to Rick Springfield. Honestly, I did not know who he was. He kept pulling up song lyrics on his iPad and then would take breaks to play “Plants vs. Zombies.” After getting off the plane, someone told me who it was. Obviously, I spent the rest of the day googling Rick Springfield and playing Plants vs. Zombies.
Q: What is on the radio in your car? A: It’s going to be 1 of 3 things: Christmas music, Christian music, or rap.
