Employee Spotlight – Loretta Weller-Mowers
This month our Employee Spotlight is on Loretta Weller-Mowers! She has been with CU Engage for over two years as a Senior Strategic Consultant. Clients love to work with Loretta, and she loves working with them! The world of digital banking is ever-changing, and because of that, Loretta is constantly changing as well. She excels at helping credit unions visualize what they want the digital experience to be for their members and helps guide them along the way.
Make Today a Great Day
Loretta is a native San Diegan, and she loves life on the West Coast! When she’s not working, Loretta is “happy as a clam” when she is at a Sunday afternoon Padres game (you read that right, they do have a professional baseball team in San Diego). Unfortunately, with the pandemic, there hasn’t been any baseball, so Loretta has been focused on her other love, cars (go easy on that 66 Mustang Loretta, if you detail it any more the paint is going to come off!), and spending time with her husband of 26 years and 14-year old rescued rat terrier, Blazer.
Loretta is a go-getter, and not only does it show in her day-to-day, but in her accomplishments as well. Among her accolades, Loretta holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from San Diego State University, was part of the Zeta class of Western CUNA Management School, and is a Certified Scrum Master, Certified Scrum Product Owner, and Certified Kanban Coach. Loretta is always sunny and positive, as her team would attest; there should be a certification for that too!
There is so much more to Loretta, her sense of humor really shines in her Q & A! Read on to learn more about her!
Q & A with Loretta
Q: What do you enjoy most about working at CU Engage? A: I love how we are constantly evolving. We are not afraid to admit where we need to improve and then we take the challenge head-on. It takes an amazing group of people to embrace constant change and that’s exactly what we have on this team!
Q: Do you have an office nickname? A: Yes, thanks, James Guild… It’s Lo! Loretta is 3 syllables so going by Lo does speed things up!
Q: What is the coolest or most important trend you see today? A: The competition in digital banking is getting fierce so seeing companies constantly innovating and utilizing AI to create awesome user experiences is super exciting.
Q: Are you a hunter or a gatherer? A: Hunter all the way.
Q: What is your favorite 90’s jam? A: “U Can’t Touch This”
Q: Have you ever met anyone famous? A: Does Spuds MacKenzie count? I pet him at a Charger game. (When the now LA Chargers were the San Diego Chargers!)
Q: Is the glass half empty or half full? A: Definitely full! The great thing about life is that every new day is a clean slate!
Q: What is one thing about you few people know? A: Oh boy, there are so many, but I’ve been wanting to get this off my chest for a while… I love Jack in the Box tacos! Yup, the greasy shell, the mystery meat, the wilted lettuce and of course the slice of cheese that never melts. Living in San Diego we have some pretty amazing tacos, so can you imagine the outrage if I admit to my friends and family that, for some strange reason, these are my favorite?
Q: What is your guilty pleasure? A: Avocados! They don’t even make it to the plate… I buy them to make guacamole but never seem to have enough left for even one tortilla chip.
Q: Best advice you’ve ever been given? A: “Open your heart because there is lots of love in this world.”
Q: What book did you read last? A: Life of the Party: The Remarkable Story of How Brownie Wise Built and Lost a Tupperware Party Empire.
Q: What is on your bucket list? A: To build a 1933 Ford coupe hot rod and drive it in the annual Pismo Beach sand races. (The hard-packed sand…)
Q: What are your pet peeves? A: Being late. I always have to tell my sister to meet me 30 minutes earlier than I really want to meet. We are total opposites! I am always 30 minutes early.
Q: If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? A: A petite filet (that’s for you, Jeff Rice) and of course, a side of sliced avocados.
Q: What was your favorite book, toy, or outfit as a child? A: I was a cowgirl all day, every day! Hat, boots, vest, Levi’s and little pleather chaps.
Q: You are happiest when: A: I’m detailing cars… It’s relaxing for me. No, I’m not for hire.
Q: What is your favorite thing or place in the city you live in? A: The Hotel Del Coronado (Technically, it’s in Coronado but it’s thought of as a San Diego icon.) I have a ton of great memories there including marrying my husband!
Q: First concert? A: The B52’s. “It was a rock lobster…”
Q: What does true leadership mean to you? A: You always have your finger on the pulse, and you set the example of the outcome you want to achieve.
Q: Describe CU Engage in 5 words or less: A: Innovative, genuine, passionate, experts, trusted
Q: If you could learn to do any one thing, what would it be? A: Play the drums! I tried the ukulele and that was an epic fail. I think I will do better being able to hit something…
Q: What makes you laugh? A: My husband has a great laugh and any time he laughs, I laugh, even if I don’t know what he’s laughing at.
Q: What inspires you? A: Watching the sunrise… It’s a new day and anything is possible!
Q: What is your favorite holiday? A: Hands down – 4th of July! My mom is from Rhode Island and every year we would have a huge clam bake at the beach. We would eat all day, take a nap on the sand and wake up just in time for the fireworks!
Q: What would you do if you won the lottery? A: This is easy… I’m pretty much low maintenance, except I do need a 1966 Sauterne Gold Mustang fastback to match my coupe. So, after I purchased that, my husband and I would donate most of it to our favorite charities.
